Rainy Day Fun

An Indoor Picnic

Finger Painting Fun
If you can tell in this picture, Possum was painting a bear and leaves.

Making Bird Seed Cookies

The mess was almost too much for me.

Notice the flour on her cheeks.

The finished products

It has been brought to my attention (many times) lately that I spend too much time doing "stuff" and not enough time doing things that are really important such as spending more time with God, Joel, and the kids. I woke up this morning with the intention of spending the day doing fun stuff with the kids. We had been outside all of five minutes when it started to rain. Inside we came with me trying to figure out what we were going to do that was fun. I had a recipe for bird seed cookies that I knew the kids would enjoy making. They were easy to make and the kids had a ball rolling the dough and cutting the cookies out. It was a big mess though. Thus we have change of clothes #2 (#1 being from pjs to play clothes). After the mess was cleaned up and the cookies were cooling we started in on finger painting. Another fun activity, but another mess. Thus change of clothes #3. By this time the kids were ready for lunch so we had an indoor picnic complete with picnic blanket and basket packed full of food. Thankfully we made it though lunch without having to move to change of clothes #4. All of this fun and no work is making my work even harder for later with all of the change of clothes! The kids are now letting Mommy have a break by playing by themselves for a little while. Guess I better go start on all of that laundry!

Bird Seed Cookies

-1 cup softened unsalted butter

-3 beaten eggs

-3 1/2 cups all purpose flour

-1 tsp. baking soda

-1/8 tsp. salt

-2 cups birdseed

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt together in large bowl. Add a 1/2 cup of birdseed, butter and eggs. Mix until well blended. Roll dough onto a floured surface; use cookie cutters to cut different shapes. Use a straw to make a hole in top of each cookie. Bake cookies in oven for 10-12 minutes. Let cool. Brush egg white onto each side of cookies and press remaining birdseed onto cookies. Allow to dry. Tie a ribbon or string through hole; hang cookies from tree limbs.

-I didn't have any unsalted butter and so I substituted shortening.
